
NTNC in collaboration with Judges’ Society of Nepal conducted a two-day workshop titled ‘Judicial Perspective on Environment and Wildlife Conservation-Related Disputes’ in Janakpurdham of Madhesh Province on 20th and 21st September.
Among the attendees at the workshop were, the NTNC Chairperson and the Federal Minister for Forests and Environment Hon. Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Supreme Court Justice and the President of Judges’ Society of Nepal Hon. Sapana Pradhan Malla, Supreme Court Justice Hon. Til Prasad Shrestha, Forest and Environment Minister of Madhesh Province Hon. Tribhuwan Shah, Chairman of the Special Court and General Secretary of Judges’ Society of Nepal Hon. Tek Narayan Kunwar, Chief Judge of the High Court of Madhesh Province Hon. Shrikant Poudel, Secretary of the Forest and Environment Ministry of Madhesh Province Mr. Uddhav Ghimire, Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Dr. Sindhu Prasad Dhungana, and Member Secretary of NTNC Dr. Naresh Subedi.
The workshop had participation of judges from the High Court and subordinate courts of Madhesh Province, government lawyers from the Public Prosecutor's Office, district attorneys, heads of national parks and forest offices, officers from the Provincial Forest Ministry, and chiefs of district forest offices.
During the opening session, Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar shed light on the objective of organizing the workshop. Remarks were also delivered by the Attorney General of Madhesh Province Mr. Surendra Kumar Mahato, Forest and Environment Minister of Madhesh Province Mr. Tribhuwan Sah, the Federal Minister of Forests and Environment Hon. Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, and the President of Judges’ Society of Nepal Hon. Sapana Pradhan Malla.
The closing ceremony of the inaugural session concluded with NTNC's Member Secretary Dr. Naresh Subedi presenting a token of love to the Federal Minister for Forests and Environment and the President of the Judges’ Society of Nepal.
Workshop sessions during the two days included curated presentations and discussions covering topics on: International and national laws on environmental protection, Provisions and efforts in Nepal to reduce wildlife crime, Challenges of investigation, prosecution and justice in environmental and wildlife crime, Principles and international practices of environmental justice, Environmental justice and judicial perspectives, Status and challenges in implementation of judgments relating to wildlife and environmental justice.
