The inaugural session of the "International Seminar on Changing Environment in the Himalayan Region" wrapped up late evening today at the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). Hon'ble Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arju Rana Deuba was the chief guest at the function, which was attended by dignitaries and delegates, policy makers and developmental planners and practitioners, from inside and outside Nepal.
At the opening session, speakers accompanying the Hon'ble Foreign Minister Dr. Deuba, were, Dr. Naresh Subedi, Member-Secretary of NTNC; Dr. Ram Thapaliya, Former Adviser to the Prime Minister of Nepal, who made the keynote address; Dr. Atul Chandrakant Kulkarni, Board Member of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shilong; Captain Alok Bansal, Director of India Foundation; Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of ICIMOD; Prof. Dhananjaya Singh, Member-Secretary, Indian Council of Social Science Research; Mr. Dipendra Kumar Bhatta, Secretary-General of Neeti Anusandhan Pratisthan Nepal (NeNAP); Dr. Mrigendra Bahadur Karki, Executive Director of the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies - Tribhuvan University.
On-stage, a felicitation was made to the veteran mountaineer and environmental activist from the Khumbu region of Nepal, Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa, by the Hon'ble Foreign Minister, who shared his six-decade long experience and concern of the dramatic changes in the Himalayan environment as a native of the Everest region. Three different book publications were also launched at the event.
The conference is scheduled up to Sunday, September 15, with dedicated sessions deliberating on the impacts of climate change, policy preparations and actions, and regional and transboundary cooperation mechanisms necessary for securing the future prosperity and heritage of the Himalayan region.
